In general, I can use these two together. My issue is this: In order to use the Korg to input multiple Latin music instruments, I have taken a Korg A-bank drum kit and edited it so that the MIDI Note Numbers for each of the percussion instruments I use in arranging Latin music are conveniently located on my keyboard. I have also produced a Drum Map for that setup. After creating an Encore test file, I open Staff Sheet, set Chnl to 10, then open the Program Name dialog, set In the following order) the Port=A, MSB=0, LSB=0, Device Preset Type=”Korg X5DR Preset a”, and the Program (Patch) to 19: Combo Kit. Then is select OK to return to Encore and enter the MIDI notes for each of the percussion instruments I have created in the Korg. Changing the Clef type to Percussion, I see that the map results in the desired Head, Position and Stem settings. Then, on the Korg, I select the Bank A, [Combo Kit] program and ensure that my MIDI Global Channel is 10

So, that’s it for the setup and creation of the test file.

Now, when I click the Play button, and NOTHING. No sounds. Changing the Port to my other X5DR (yes, I have two of them) I play the same patch and get the preset sounds for that patch(VERY) loud and clear.

I have (1) saved my drum kit edit and (2) compared all the Global settings on the two X5DRs – they are identical. I don’t understand what’s happening. I do kmow that Encore can’t create or send Custom Sysex messages and that what the SX5DR wants to see is, in order: MSB, LSB, Program #.

Any idsess or experience with this type of thing?

I’m not clear on what you are doing. Are you using the Korg X5DR to generate the notes or playback only? Otherwise, how are you entering notes? Mac or Windows? What kind of MIDI interface?

Thanks, Mike. I am using Encore 5.07 on a Windows 11 PC with an M-Audio MIDISport 4×4 as my MIDI interface to a pair of XRDRs.

I have since figured out what happened: the X5DR did not map the edited drum sounds to the 8va stated on its display. For example, C3 actually played when I played C0 on my MIDI controller keyboard. So, simply had to play the notes three octaves lower than what I had intended for them to be.

So, you might ask, why do I still use these old synth modules? Two reasons: first, they have excellent sounding Latin percussion kits (I write a lot of Latin music) and instrument sounds in general and second, it’s an easy interface to set up with Encore, Sibelius, Finale and Sonar, which are in my tool bag.
