Working on a score today brought to mind one of my issues with how Encore works. Suppose that I put labels on each section of a score and that some of these sections had rests / tacets in some parts. Then when extracting such a part, I cannot use the Compress Rests feature because the section label will not allow measures physically under it to be compressed. So, this causes two possible “gotchas”. First, If I do select “Compress Rests”, the rests in sections with labels have to be first uncompressed, then the label has to be moved out of the way. Next the measures have to be recompressed, and finally the label has to be moved back. And this has to be done for EACH affected part. The second possible gotcha is when Compress Rests isn’t selected. Then, the process of moving labels, ompressing rests and re-placing labels has to be done for each part.
And while I’m talking anout extracting parts, a nice to have would be an automation text to mark sections of (especially percussion) parts with a command feature that allows their extraction to produce a numbered extended rest with the caption “Play”, or “Similar”, replacing the notation that was there in the full score. (Yes, some of us like to hear all the parts together in the full score before exporting the parts.)

August 22, 2025 at 7:46 pm #4677My workaround for that gotcha is to ] or [ (add more measures to the current line) until the compressed rest that’s under the area I’m trying to edit gets under another area. You can also add measures to kick the compressed measures away but I never really do that. I usually can handle everything by shrinking and growing the number of measures in the current “system”. Maybe even pull in the compressed measures into the current system. Or reduce the number of measures to push it away. Then edit what I need and readjust the number of measures per system back.
At some point I think I did the expand rests trick but I haven’t done that in a while favoring this way.
This doesn’t really just knock it out of the park – but maybe gives you a different workaround to try that may be marginally better.
Speaking of extracting parts. I usually score up say a horn section on one score and I’ll put some horn as voice 1, another as voice 2. And then I try to get these to their own separate parts — I struggle and wish I’d done it another way. Every time. I never learn. I think what I’m supposed to do is put all the instruments on a different staff. But I wish there was a way I could put it all on one staff (because it’s easier for me to see the harmony that way) and have things get extracted into individual parts.
