I am not there yet, but I am definitely making progress and I am still working 12 hours a day.
I hope to release a basic program that reads in Encore files with a few import features working so users can get an idea of what is coming. As I stated before, I am using the Overture engine so that I do not have to maintain two different source codes.
Also this will allow for quick improvements of Encore, once it is released.Funny thing is, the latest code that was sent to me, will not open some of the original Mac demo files.
But, the good news is, I can open them with the new code. This is why I have chosen to use Overture code, instead of the old Encore code.
The old Encore code has been driving me nuts, with all the bugs, so it is a very slow process.BTW, I was able to get the current running on an M1 iMac.
Status:
1) Can open old almost all old Encore files.
2) Layout is 90% correct to the old score’s layout, including page text and margins.
3) Can read in time and key signatures, clefs, notes, rests, beams, slurs, ties, text (with only one style at this time), but no tuplets, yet.
4) Can read in Marks 1 palette (ornaments), Marks 2 palette (articulations), and symbols from the symbols palette.
5) Can read in all of the Guitar palette fingerings, strings, and the barre lines. No bends at this time.
6) Can now read bar numbers, guitar frames (can’t show the fingerings for different fret position), and lyrics.
7) I have been moving a few menu option to the right side panels thus eliminating more dialogs.New modern interface with a few differences
1. The right side of the main window contains what I am calling control buttons.
These basically open up small dialogs that were previously in the menus in the right side panel.
This allows for modeless data entry. Once you get use to it, it’s quite elegant.
2. Encore 6 may have the ability to open up several projects and each project can open multiple scores.
I don’t know if I am going to include this at this time, but I do have it working.
I was working on this for Overture, and thought why not test it here.
3. A big decision is what about the palettes. As you can see by the pictures,
Encore 6 has all the palettes on the left side. Overture’s are better organized and have more symbols.
So should I keep the old Encore palettes or use the Overture palette layout.
It is not a significant change but users will have to adjust.
Ex. Marks 1 is ornaments. Marks 2 is mostly articulations. They definitely need some work.
4. I have included a small one track MIDI mixer at the top of the palettes, just like Overure.
The mixer is very convenient for live changes.
5. The MIDI keyboard is much larger and is docked at the bottom.
6. I have moved the control bar buttons to be more symmetrical.
7. Encore 6 may have more engraver settings that can be set by the user.
8. Encore 6 will have the ability to set new key commands in the preferences dialog. The articulations and ornaments positioning on the notes is off a bit.
This is because the Overture code, like Dorico, Sibelius, Finale, all place the articulations and ornaments in standard default positions.
Ex. Most articulations are placed outside the staff by default. Old Encore places them next to the note most of the time, not outside the staff.
Ex. Old Encore places guitar strings on top of the note, but they should be on the right side of the note head.
I am trying to alter the code to allow the import to have them in the composers placed position, even though it might not be the standard position.
We’ll see how it goes. I have not decided if I should allow articulations, ornaments, etc., that are supposed to be attached to a note, to be entered into empty space, not on a note.9. I made the plunge and the palettes have been reworked.
They and are now more intuitive, have a few more symbols, and have added a keyboard and percussion palette.
They also have a close button, so you can only see the ones you need.
Note: I’ll be eliminating the tools and symbols palette, by putting their functions in a more appropriate palette.
10. Horizontal spacing has been solved, imported scores looks very close to the original. After discussions with a few users, I have decided to add VST3/Audio Unit support.
Apparently this was a common complaint in past years. It’s getting close,
