It’s not my choice to believe Encore 6 will never come out. It’s my observation it hasn’t for 6 years. I had moved on to Finale (which is closing) but have learned and use Dorico and Sibelius now. Is your ready defense of a non existent software with no realistic release date based on info no-one else has? I’m not being argumentative, I like many would like some actual input. If it ever appears, I would look at it. Having downloaded and used Overture I would find it an easy read since Don has stated he is building encore 6 from Overture script as he has scrapped the original Encore code as problematic. So instead of waiting on Encore you could download Overture written by Don https://sonicscores.com/overture/

andre.baeck, Have you downloaded Overture yet? Since Don is using the source code from Overture to write Encore you’ll be able to see what Encore 6.0 is going to look like.

Well, Mr. Delanghe (Belgian?), I have looked at Overture, sure. I have two comments:

        1. Don has said since the beginning that he would “improve the outdated interface”. Look at the “development” menu on this site, which was written in 2022, that I know: https://passportmusic.com/development/2053-2/
The new interface looks already close to Overture’s. But it’s the current trend, not very different of what Musescore looks like.
For sure, the nowadays’ screen definitions allow things which were not possible in the 1990’s.
A similar lay-out does not mean a similar mode of operation.

        2. Re-using the Overture engine impacts the internals of the product, not necessarily the user interface and the mode of operation.

Furthermore, what is most important for the user is that the software reads the Encore files.

Don has implied a lot since 2022. Albeit sporadically and with no tangible Encore results. But this year is about over and “Coming in Summer of 2027” will be the next post to continue the trend. Remember, Encore 5.07 was the last release in 2014. That’s 12 years ago. Which is why I understand that Don couldn’t use that 32 bit architecture in a 64 bit world. But next year will only be 5 years after “Coming Soon” I continue to use Sibelius and Dorico with satisfaction, and am a beta tester for Celtic Pipes bagpipe music software. https://www.celticpipes.com/ It’s quite enjoyable conversing with the programmer Rod. He always replies quickly and enjoys my input for suggestions for features. He updates any bugs quickly and makes updates downloadable quickly.

IMO, that’s the only thing that’s important.

Although people tout various solutions, many of them discussed here, none of them work very well including having an old Mac running macOS 10.14 Mojave (I have two). Though that does work better, it’s still buggy and I’m often surprised by disappearing notes, voices, lyrics, texts etc. when I go to print or export to pdf.

Even MusictoPDF Pro isn’t a very good solution. It’s MusicXML 2.whatever implementation is glitchy and I’m being generous with that. Often, when used to export an Encore file into Finale, I know it will be faster and easier to re-enter the score from scratch.

Perhaps I’ll learn Dorico someday—I’ve had it since v.2 but it requires too much 2-handed work, a luxury I do not enjoy. As far as I’m concerned, Harmony Assistant is crap. Although I’d like for Encore to be updated, everything new begins in Finale these days. Unless I buy a new Mac in 2028 or later, Finale should keep chugging for a long time (and I may have a workaround next year).

Interestingly, Overture’s MusicXML export & import into Finale is very accurate, far more so than Muse Score and much, much better than Encore through MusictoPDF Pro.

BTW, I am not using Overture’s source code to write Encore 6. In fact in the past three months I have only look at Overture’s source a couple of times to understand how to do a few things. Every bit of Encore’s code has been written from scratch, except for picking out pieces to read the old encore files. I will use Overture’s engine to process the data, playback, and so on because Encore’s is way out of touch. The code has been written from scratch to be very clean and so it will not end up a mess like before. So clean a amateure can understand it

Several years ago, a very large company offered to buy me out, but I was not ready at the time. I’m sure they would be interested in taking over Encore 6 next year because I have included a few features they have been looking for and very clean code and is a program that can compete in the marketplace. They are not wanting old Encore as an MusicXML exporter and neither am I, and I have every intention of Encore out living me!
