Mike, I have to correct myself…
I own PrintMusic and not Songwriter.
I’m still getting totally confused with all the names of the sheet music programs.
But the same applies to PrintMusic. I bought a user book but it’s frustrating to enter lyrics in PrintMusic when you’re used to the straightforward input in Encore.

I no longer do anything at all in PrintMusic and have transferred all the scores to Encore.
Funny. PrintMusic uses the same extension for its files (.mus) as MusicTime. Since I still have old MusicTimes files on my computer, PrintMusik asks me every time I call up the software whether I should reserve the .mus extension just for PrintMusik.

        True words…
I don’t know anyone who works with Dorico and have no experience with it myself.
In my opinion, Finale was far too complicated to use right from the start. This could also be recognized by the fact that the company KLEMM,
the German distributor of Finale, published a lot of practice books without which Finale was not manageable.
As I’ve written here before, I bought Songwriter, the simplified version of Finale. Here, too, I had to buy a book where everything was described in detail.
I then spent more time leafing through this book than writing scores.

Anyway, I mentioned elsewhere in this forum that now would be the ideal time to release a modern Encore 6 and offer hundreds of stranded Finale users a new sheet music program.
That would be a brilliant business move.

          yabori,
I’m not very knowledgeable about the Mac version but it looks like you are in demo mode, meaning your Encore version is not unlocked.
Do you have your unlock key?
What appears when you press the “Help” button and then “About Encore”?

Your statement is not entirely correct.
We have tried alternatives, but have not found any where it would be worth changing.

When converting the old Encore files, a lot of information such as lyrics and dynamic accidentals are lost. Which would mean a lot of rework until the files were up to date again. And all this with a program that you have not (yet) fully mastered.
You have to keep in mind whether it’s worth all the effort.
I think it’s worth a try for Mac users, but not for Windows users at the moment.

Who would have thought that Finale would disappear from the market and join Steinberg’s Dorico?
The software preferred by Encore users is Overture from Sonic Scores. This is said to be very similar to Encore, which is not very surprising as it is from the same developer.
But Overture users are also eagerly awaiting version 6.
As you can see, it is not so easy to leave the beaten track and embark on something completely new.

Good luck in your search for an alternative. Let us know if you find something useful.

              Confirm!
I’am still using Encore with Windows 7, no Problems.
I’ve tried ‘Song Writer’ the little sister from Finale but I wasn’t able to create scores without a helping book.

It was similar with Musescore or Dorico. Far too complicated for me. I’ve probably gotten too used to the ease of use of Encore. I love the lyrics input. On the other hand, I also have a lot of Encore scores that I don’t want to convert into a program that I then don’t like to use.
So I’m waiting for “better times” 🙂

Isn’t this another opportunity for Encore?
                What does Don think?

I work under Windows7 with Encore without any problems.
I found the following on the internet for Windows 11: Programs that depend on 16-bit binaries or 32-bit drivers cannot run on the 64-bit versions of Windows unless the program manufacturer provides an update for the program.

You can check whether your operating system is a 32-bit or 64-bit system: Select “Start” and “Settings”. Select System . Select About . Check under “Device specifications” and “System type” whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.

I was recently on the Sonic Scores website and saw that a new program called “Amadeus Symphonic Orchestra” has been released.
This is probably one of the reasons why Overture and Encore have been delayed.

You’re quite right that waiting is not very useful for older people.
But I think Don is probably the same in our age group. So I hope that Don is still young enough to finish Encore 6 😉

A dream is a dream until it becomes reality.
As “Musiker” already said: As long as Encore 5 runs on Windows computers, Windows users can still dream.
It will probably be more difficult for Mac users. Hang in there guys!
Personally, I’ve gotten so used to Encore that it will be difficult to switch.
I have Finale’s little brother, but I don’t get on at all with the lyrics input. The input is a real pain. It may be that you can learn it, but if you don’t use the software every day, you forget a lot of things.
Musescore is just as user-unfriendly. I still haven’t managed to create a simple guitar tab with Musescore.
The only alternative for me is Encore 6, if it remains as user-friendly as Encore 5.

I hope Don Williams is in the best of health and manages to make the impossible come true: Encore 6!

That’s what I meant. Both projects are being worked on and this is delaying completion.
Overture users are probably also eagerly awaiting an update after the last one was in December 2019.
I’m still quite confident about that…
Because as the German saying goes: Good things take time. 🙂

When I was writing a 3-page score in Encore and wanted to enter the chord names, I finally found the solution for custom chord names! Yeah!

In the “Chord symbols” view, uncheck “Show root” and enter the desired chord name in the “Custom” free text window at the bottom – that’s all.
Click on “OK” to accept the desired chord name.
Finally I can display the German “H” instead of the Anglo-American “B”.
I hadn’t noticed this for years due to “operational blindness”. Shame on me…

I’m a little confused about the version you specified. The last revision for Windows computers was 5.0.4.875.
Version 5.0.4.858 is a demo version that cannot be activated with a license key.
What version is the installation from your CD?

Mike Haloran wrote in July 2023 that Overture 6 is planned for Sonic Scores.
I was just on the Overture homepage. There is currently no Overture 6.
I don’t think there will be an Encore 6 until Overture 6 is ready. Don will have a lot to do if he works on 2 programs at the same time.
But then I also think that Encore 6 might become a clone of Overture to speed things up.

Only Don will be able to tell us more about this.

It would certainly be a possibility to inundate Sonic Scores with e-mails to generate a reaction. 🙂
