  • in reply to: Desperate for a serial number – Help?? #3856

    Hello Jim,
The question of legality/legitimacy isn’t easy to answer. We have a usage license with PassportMusic Software (eventually transferred from GVOX), and that company has stopped doing business. It isn’t totally clear if Don has, later, gotten a transfer of the whole company – including the licenses – or only bought the IP rights on the two products. He has said that he hadn’t the server with the customer base files. And he does not sell nor repair Encore 5 licenses.

So, the legal status of Encore 5 might as well be that it has become public domain, as that all our licenses have gotten obsolete!

Assuming that the reality is something in between, I think that a usage license can always be given or sold to anybody else (as one can always do with a copyrighted book), but that may depend on the laws applicable in the country of the transferring party, which may supersede the specific license agreements (EULA).

If you expect a volunteer to rise up, you should indicate if you need a Windows or Mac version. If I remember it well, an Encore 5 license was cross-platforms, but the licensed material – including the serial number – is not. Best also specify your e-mail address.

As far as I understand (I don’t use MasterTracks) the “current” (but old”) version is numbered 6.
While the distribution file of Encore 5 was either a demo version (available at several places), or a production version which requires a serial number,

for MasterTracks there was only a single version, which runs in demo mode till one enters the serial number.
Therefore, I’m surprized that you could not enter your serial number to activate the version you have. This should be possible on the “about” panel.

If that would not be true, perhaps one of the current MTP6 users still has the installation file, and could share it with you.

If a link to the Encore 5 installation file would help you to install on a new computer, please send me a mail to

in reply to: Want original Encore software. Does anybody have it ? #3827

Hello, currently Encore cannot be ordered. Encore Version 5 had a last version made available about 10 years ago, then PassportMusic went in a kind of idle state and stopped business three years ago. It was then reactivated in spring 2022 and development of Encore 6 had started. Delevery is expected rather soon now, but it might need some more time to stablilize.

I can share the downloadable versions but they cannot be used without a license code, and nobody is entitled to sell or otherwise distribute license codes.
The only thing that is freely available is a demo version, which is operational except for saving scores (and prints only with a “watermark”).
I have it for Windows, and there must be a 32-bit version for Mac versions older than Catalina.

Once Encore6 will be available, we will need a forum software which is more robust than this WordPress mess.
The classical YaBB and phpBB would be much much better!

Perhaps a few of us could volunteer as administrator.

I don’t know, personally I’m not fond of video tutorials.
The priority should be on a reference manual, and a starter’s user’s guide.

First thing to question, is “Can a time/key signature, or a clef”, be changed inside the score. Logically, if the product supports that, it should “obviously” read in/convert these signatures from an imported file.

What I just did, is checking if Overture support these changes. Since Encore 6 will be an Encore interface to the existing Overture engine, one could reasonably think that this functionality should be similar.

Overture supports signature/clef changes in the middle of a score, but only at the beginning of a measure (bar). For Time Signature, I think that this is normal. For clef/key changes, some editors support it in the middle of a bar, some don’t.
That I can check (since I forgot) Encore 5 can have a clef change in the middle of a bar, but a key change only at the beginning.

You’ll find the registration number in registry entry
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PASSPORT\Encore\5.0\Registration]
    as value of variable “SN”=

You might want to check sometimes (using REGEDIT), before launching Encore 5, if this variable is still there. It might be wiped out by some cleaning software.

You might want to export that entry, then restore it when necessary (easier thatn retyping…)

Note: for old or beta Encore 5 versions, the registry key may have “GVOX” or “PassportMusic” instead of “PASSPORT”

    Hello Mike,
Do I understand it well that the heading and first paragraph represent a quote fropm somebody else (I didn’t see that in this forum),
and that from the second paragraph onwards (I’m glad…) it is your own reply?

I may have had that. Are you inon Mac or Win?
How exactly did you “copy” the file?

You may want to send me both files (original and copied) I could have a look

According to a very recent reply, the new owner of Passport Music Software has no archive of the registration information issued earlier by GVOX or the “PassportMusic” (not sure of spelling) company who took over around 2013.

If you are with Windows, the registration code is stored in the Windows registry. I suppose that it may have been wiped out by something… Do you have some backup files of your system, in which you could recover the registry?

If what you need is an install file – and you have your registration code – you can mail me at andre(dot)baeck(at)gmail(dot)com

Sorry that I did not see tyour post earlier (only several other of yours) the time stamps on this forum are very strange (though that may depend on the computer’s time format)

Anthony, Encore 6 isn’t available yet, so there isn’t any download page!

I have checked my ruins of Encore 4.5 and MTDL 3.5. What I have archived doesn’t work well anymore, and what I remember as where the registration code lies (in an installation) seems no longer valid. I can open and save old files but not print them (I think the print routines are no longer compatible with Windows 10/11.

These 45/35 files can be opened – and printed – in Encore 5. I hope that this intermediary step will not be necessary.

I never saw MusicTime creating .mts files, I would have thought that .mts was for MasterTracks (which I never used).
MusicTime “DeLuxe” was normally creating .mus files (but other editors also, though they are not compatible). Another extension was .rhp (for Rhapsody, an intermediate level at some time).
